Alexan and Petra have settled into an idyllic life as Jarl and Frue of Ygg, each satisfying their respective divine curses. But Siluria next door starts generating massive shockwaves, unable to absorb the energy being generated by the scourgings every seven days. Worse, Siluria is home to the warlike diligar, who are likely to launch an invasion as their home is ravaged.
It’s hard to unravel a puzzle the size of several universes. Alexan has only just begun to solve it when one of his experiments poisons an enigmatic divinity far greater than himself or Petra.
But mistakes can also provide opportunities.
Alexan: Alexan is Jarl of Ygg, most prominent noble of the Kingdom of Treemount. He’s also the most highly trained wizard known in all the Connected Realms. The ghost of a previous self made flesh, he is in exile from outside the Connected Realms, and the first person people turn to when there are problems in Aescalon, the cavern and source of magical power that connects and feeds all of the Connected Realms.
Petra is Frue of Ygg, Alexan’s wife. She was originally created – fully adult – as a demigoddess, the seducer and punisher of unfaithful men. After ten thousand years in the role, she appealed to Alexan to help her escape, and they ended up married. She is a wizard by legacy of her creation, but Alexan has taught her more of wizardry than she previously knew existed, and she is considered second only to her husband in wizardry.
Catharin is daughter to Alexan and Petra. Indulged by her mother, her progress as a wizard is far behind where Alexan believes she should be at the age of twelve.
Ansharos is Catharin’s younger brother. Also indulged by their mother, he’s been Catharin’s co-conspirator in avoiding the tasks of growing up. But he’s beginning to come out from under her shadow.
Ioen is their steward, and Methen is Alexan’s secretary. Both are older men
King Edvard of Treemount: first of his line, owes his throne to backing by Alexan. A former mercenary leader and once a jarl of the kingdom. In his early 60s, but is maintained in youth by Queen Veronia.
Queen Veronia: Edvard’s wife, mother to his five children (so far), a minor wizard limited in power but avid in learning – and as she is a student of Alexan’s, she has learned a lot. She’s in her mid-30s, but looks like she’s about 18.
Noroliosa: a powerful but unknown entity, accidentally poisoned by one of Alexan’s experiments.
