(I’m trying something here: Asking the same questions of the viewpoint character at or near the beginning of each book in a series to demonstrate how they have changed due to events. This series is Rediscovery, my first series and this is the second novel in that series)
Go ahead and introduce yourself.
I’m Grace – Graciela Juarez di Scimtar, except I’m not really a Scimtar. That’s a courtesy name because they adopted me until I earn my adulthood. But I live with them, eat with them, and House Scimtar pays for my education, which I do appreciate.
Tell us where and when were you born.
I was born in Riverside, on Earth, a lost colony in another instance.
How would you describe yourself?
Bewildered by the differences between Earth and the Empire. I’m newly operant, learning how to use my new abilities to best advantage.
Tell us about where you grew up.
There’s no way to sugarcoat it: Earth is insane by any reasonable standard. Problems everyone realizes are allowed to fester, and everybody pretends not to see the them.
How old are you?
I’m 28 Earth years old – 40 by Imperial reckoning
Did you have a happy childhood? Why/why not?
Despite everything wrong with Earth, yes I had a happy childhood. I didn’t know how good I had it. A loving family, plenty to eat, everyone had a room of their own and clothes to wear and even plenty of entertainment.
Past/ present relationships? How did they affect you?
I was wild in my high school years through my early twenties. I had an older boyfriend – he eventually suicided by overdose. I was using too; but kicked it with my sister’s help and that of her husband
What do you value above all else in life?
This opportunity I’ve been given to be Earth’s first operant with Imperial training. I hope to be the start of a new era for Earth.
What are you obsessed with?
I want to learn to use my new abilities, so I can use them to help people and teach others.
How do your beliefs make life better for yourself and the people you care about?
Right now, not much. I’m spending all my time learning what the Empire has to teach me to start helping others. With what I will be able to do in a year or so, I hope to change Earth into something better for everyone.
Biggest fear?
Something will happen that will prevent me from using my new abilities for everyone on Earth
What line will you never cross?
I will never again turn my head away and pretend not to see what is plainly there.
What is the best thing that ever happened to you?
Becoming operant and having the Scimtars adopt me
The worst?
I lost a man who I only knew for two days, who sacrificed himself willingly
Most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?
Knocking myself out in the middle of an escape attempt
Biggest secret?
No comment.
What is the one word you would use to define yourself?
Learning!
What is your current goal?
I want to learn enough to help Earth solve some of its worst problems.
