(I’m trying something here: Asking the same questions of the viewpoint character at or near the beginning of each book in a series to demonstrate how they have changed due to events. This series is Rediscovery, my first series and this is the fourth and final novel in that series)
Go ahead and introduce yourself.
Graciela Juarez di Scimtar – but everyone calls me Grace
Tell us where and when were you born.
I was born in Riverside, California, on Earth, which was a lost colony yet to be recontacted at the time. We’d lost all recollection of our roots in the Empire.
How would you describe yourself?
I’m a mid-tier Second Order Guardian, a highly trained psionic, although not born operant and in the middle of the lowest tier of mind power, that’s still enough to allow me to do the vast majority of what even the strongest Guardians can do. I’ve adopted what the Empire calls an ‘endurance build’ physically – I’m about 5 foot 6 now, and you might guess I’d weigh about 140, but it’s more like 180 because operant muscle is dense. As a result, I’m about five times stronger and thirty times faster, and that’s just the physical side. The mental side and what I can do with that is far more important.
Tell us about where you grew up.
Riverside and the United States of my youth as a whole was the most advanced technological society on Earth, but we were socially and morally lost, as was most of the rest of the planet. This is largely because refugee stons from the Rebellion and fractal demons were intentionally causing it, but they wouldn’t have gotten near as much traction as they did without wholehearted native cooperation.
How old are you?
I am 41 Imperial in terms of personal duration – roughly 29 Earth years.
Did you have a happy childhood? Why/why not?
I had it very good. We lived in the safest society on the planet, my mother devoted herself to raising us, my father made plenty to support us, and older siblings all doted on me. I was an ungrateful wretch convinced I was being persecuted, but I know better now.
Past/ present relationships? How did they affect you?
I was wild from about the age of 15 to 23 Earth years (21 to 32 Imperial). Lots of lovers, only one really serious though. When he committed suicide by overdose, it made me really take a hard look and decide to fix myself.
What do you value above all else in life?
My family and my husband’s, and our unborn children.
What are you obsessed with?
Obsession is unhealthy, but I want to make things better for people
How do your beliefs make life better for yourself and the people you care about?
I managed to keep the casualties in the nuclear exchange between China and Russia to a minimum, prevent an invasion of a defenseless United States, and convince the Empire to step in and begin assimilating Earth rather than waiting for it to fall apart completely.
Biggest fear?
That the fractal demons will destroy the Empire, or even just Earth.
What line will you never cross?
One of the lessons I’ve had to learn is there are few absolutes in this life. But I will not betray those entitled to my loyalty
What is the best thing that ever happened to you? The worst?
The best was when Asto and I just fit together like I’d always heard husband and wife should. The worst was when his Asto’s uncle sacrificed himself.
Most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?
Still when Asto’s younger brother Etonas propositioning me right at family dinner with his whole family there at the table
Biggest secret?
There are still people who would be hurt by telling you
What is the one word you would use to define yourself? Searching, for something else worthwhile to do.
What is your current goal?
My Imperial citizenship is still Metic – I have residency and civil rights, but am not permitted to earn service points or contract with the Imperial government. Since my husband will be joining the military soon, I intend to join at the same time and earn full citizenship.
