Politics Of Empire is four novels, with Graciela Juarez (‘Grace’) as main character. It is not necessary to read the Rediscovery series to understand what’s going on. It is written largely in parallel with Preparations for War, but where the latter series is written grunt-level from the viewpoint of someone in the frontline, Politics of Empire is behind the lines, with some of the characters being powerful people within the Empire.

She discovers that carrying her child makes a positive difference in childhood development, but she’s endangered by the fact that another powerful family has already done the same thing – and they may not want the benefits to become public knowledge.

Grace and her family have been living on a piloting module while she works as the Imperial version of a space trucker, moving massive cargo vessels between systems of the Empire of Humanity, protected by being one of many billions of Vector pilots. But her husband has obtained one of the few berths in the military that allows him to live off base, so it’s time to move back into the Scimtar Family Residence. Almost as soon as she arrives, the Scimtars are embroiled in a House War with the ancient and powerful Cor family, and the fallout changes the balance of power among the elite families of the Empire. Her husband’s family finds her a job as an Investigator, determining the facts of both criminal and civil cases to aid the Primus magistrates. But since she’s a stronger Guardian than most investigators, she begins being tasked with internal security investigations.
