(I am leaving spoilers out – there’s more)
Aescalon was a setting I had the idea for a long time ago, inspired by Zelazny’s Amber and Moorcock’s Champion Eternal stories, most notably among them the first Corum trilogy.
The apparent central point of the trilogy is Aescalon, a fire- and flood-blasted cavern roughly 25 miles across – not a planet, more of a ‘hollow core’ type of place. Aescalon near ground level is packed with ‘baby universes’ which only wizards can access, but there are, placed about the cavern, 165 gates into universes nearly ready to stand on their own, gates which ordinary people can access. All of these universes are receiving a torrent of mass energy from Aescalon – the energy of magic is more plentiful here than anywhere else.
Every seven days, Aescalon experiences a scourging – fire and water scrub the cavern bare, before flowing into the universally accessible gates. Nothing lives in the cavern of Aescalon – and the Fountains mentioned in the title of the first book are fountains of energy.

Migurd is one of the 165 major realms of Aescalon. The entry to Migurd is high up a giant tree, ancient and gnarled, fed by the power flowing through into Migurd from Aescalon. The tree’s roots go deep into a mountain, detritus of material that has flowed into Migurd.
Right away, the protagonist discovers there are at least three levels of divinity associated with Aescalon – Immortals, Eternals, and Monads. All divinities have a divine curse, which pushes them in certain behavioral ways, but the three types of divinity are progressively bound more tightly into their divine roles. The higher up in the divine hierarchy, the harder it is to do anything that does not tightly adhere to their divine curse.

However, as is later discovered, there are occasionally instabilities within the realms connected to Aescalon, as things change, the maturing universes fill with energy, and sometimes, a comparatively minor shove can start things off.
