Joseph Bernard in Preparing The Ground

I’m trying something here: Asking the same questions of the viewpoint character at or near the beginning of each book in a series to demonstrate how they have changed due to events. This series is Preparations For War, and Preparing The Ground is the first in that series

Go ahead and introduce yourself.

Joseph Bernard. Mos people call me Joe

Tell us where and when were you born.

I was born in Riverside California. Mom was staying with Grandpa and Grandma while Dad was on Westpac

How would you describe yourself?

More or less average, physically. I’m about 5 foot 11, reasonably athletic but nothing like a sports star.

Tell us about where you grew up.

The family moved around every couple of years while Dad was in the navy. Settled down in Temecula, California when he retired and got a job at Fallbrook Weapons Center.

How old are you?

I’m twenty-two. That’s thirtyone Imperial.

Did you have a happy childhood? Why/why not?

Pretty happy. Navy brats learn to make friends because we have to make new ones every couple years.

Past/ present relationships? How did they affect you?

A series of girlfriends, none of them serious.

What do you value above all else in life?

That’s a good question. I don’t have a good answer for you; I’m still sorting things out.

What are you obsessed with?

Right now, like most of the family, I’m obsessed with learning more about the Empire. We got a head start thanks to Tia Grace when she came back from the Empire after Guardian training.

How do your beliefs make life better for yourself and the people you care about?

My beliefs don’t do much for anyone. I earn a living and do a good job, but that’s nothing unusual.

Biggest fear?

We’re on a mission to discover new habitable worlds near Earth; that’s one thing the Empire will pay well for. My biggest fear is that I will somehow screw this mission up.

What line will you never cross?

I won’t intentionally do something wrong.

What is the best thing that ever happened to you?

Tia Grace hiring me for her dog farm and cargo handler. It gave me a leg up on Imperial society and opportunity to learn Imperial tech.

The worst?

The feds raided us because the cloak on Tia Grace’s ship failed. She and her ship were gone, but I had a little bit of marijuana in my room, which gave them excuse to arrest us, try to impound the dog farm, and try to force Tia Grace to give them what they wanted

Most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?

What I just said.

Biggest secret?

The others don’t know it, but I’m the legal commander for this mission. I’ve had a year to study the Empire before contact; I passed the official adulthood tests. None of the others has had the chance.

What is the one word you would use to define yourself?

Exploring

What is your current goal?

I want to have a successful mission. We need Imperial currency on Earth if we’re going to advance economically
